Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (commonly known as the AQF) is a unified system of national qualifications in schools, vocational education and training (TAFEs and private providers) and the higher education sector (mainly universities).

The Framework links together all these qualifications and is a highly visible, quality-assured national system of educational recognition which promotes lifelong learning and a seamless and diverse education and training system.

VET in Schools

VET in Schools programs are designed to expand opportunities and pathways for senior secondary students, and improve post compulsory educational outcomes in line with the Government's goals and, as well as address the employment needs of industry in Victoria.

VET in Schools programs comprise nationally recognised VET certificates undertaken by senior secondary students as part of their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). They provide a vocationally oriented program of studies leading to a secondary school certificate.  VET in Schools programs are typically delivered through partnership between schools, industry and training providers, and often include opportunities for students to participate in workplace learning.

Students enrolled in VET programs may also combine study and employment through a School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships which allows students to do their VCE or VCAL concurrently with an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

The VCAL has been designed with the needs of young people in years 11 and 12 in mind and will develop and extend the pathways from school to VCE, further education, training and work.

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a hands-on option for students in years 11 and 12. It gives practical work-related experience, as well as literacy and numeracy skills and the opportunity to build personal skills that are important for life and work. It is an accredited secondary certificate.

Further Education

Further Education plays a key role in facilitating access to lifelong learning. For many years it has become a necessity and this is reflected by the steady growth in the adult and community education sector in recent years.

Programs such as English as a Second Language (ESL), VCE for adults and many other further education programs are delivered by TAFE Institutes, private providers and community based providers as well as the more specifically focussed Adult Migrant Education Services (AMES).

Degrees in TAFE

TAFE Institutes offer degree programs to meet the needs of industry, clients and government in partcular areas. Several TAFE Institutes have been successful in receiving accreditation for vocational undergraduate degree qualifications.
