Governance Workshop 3 - "Governance Risk Management Matters"
Managed by the VTA for TAFE Council/Board Directors
A series of these Workshops was held from October 2006 to February 2007. OTTE and the Victorian Managed Insurance Agency sponsored the workshops managed by the VTA.
The Workshop was delivered by Peter O’Callaghan, Principal Wyndarra Consulting.
Wyndarra Consulting has been operating for more than twelve years specialising in corporate governance, enterprise risk management and audit. Peter has numerous major public and private sector clients across Australia. He is also regarded by national and international professional peers as one of Australia’s leading risk management practitioners and has advised major accountancy firms on risk management implementation. He has delivered risk management workshops internationally including The Netherlands, USA, Thailand and Singapore. More recently Peter has been implementing enterprise risk management frameworks for the National Research Council of Canada and has delivered training sessions to other Canadian agencies. From 1988 to 1994, Peter was engaged as General Manager Audit ANZ Banking Group, South Asia – Bombay and ANZ Chief Auditor Australia.
In the context of the role of a TAFE Board Director, the Workshop focused on:
- Background to contemporary governance and the relationship with risk management practices
- Key principles of Risk Management (including approach and methodology) and how these principles are applied
- Identification of the top level strategic risks or risk issues facing the Institutes
- Understanding the links between risks, controls and risk strategies
- Examine effective risk management reporting techniques and understanding key risk issues, controls and management strategies
- Clarify TAFE Board roles and responsibilities in relation to the risk management program.
OTTE, the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority and VTA representatives attended the Workshop.
Note: The VTA is discussing with OTTE the development of a series of workshops related to Financial Reporting/Accountabilities for Board Directors. Further details will follow in the near future.

"Culture & Continuous Improvement in a Board Context"

The Culture and Continuous Improvement in a Board Context Workshops were delivered by Jim Grant of Dattner Grant who is recognised as a skilled facilitator in the area of culture and continuous improvement. The Workshops have received excellent evaluations from Association members. OTTE and VTA representatives attended all Workshop sessions.
In the context of the role of a TAFE Board Director, the Workshops focused on:
- Monitoring Organisational Performance
- Performance Assessment
- Professional Development
In addition, Board Directors will be provided with resource materials that address:
- Identifying Personal Values
- Ethical Values
- Confidentiality and Conflict or Interest
